Rapid progress continues on the development of the advanced module format VITA 46 standard. VITA 46, which features a new 7-row connector rated for high speed I/O signaling rates up to 6.25 Gbps, supports the full range of current and emerging interconnect standards that support multi-gigabit serial signaling rates.
These standards include the well known serial fabrics such as Serial RapidIO, PCI Express, Advanced Switching, and InfiniBand. Also included is a range of I/O types such as digital video, 10 gigabit Ethernet, Serial Attached SCSI, Serial ATA, and FPGA serial interconnects like RocketIO.
This new standard is designed to meet the needs of application areas typified by Defense and Aerospace that require a large number of high-speed capable I/O pins, are space-constrained, and ready for harsh environments. In addition, the ESD-protected connectors enable the development of a fully ESD protected module, thus supporting military two-level maintenance practices.
