VITA 46 Advanced Module Format ñ The future standard for military VME

VITA Technologies (VME and Critical Systems) — February 13, 2005

Feature / Discussion: February 2005Rapid progress continues on the development of the advanced module format standard. VITA 46, which features a new 7-row connector rated for high speed I/O signaling rates up to 6.25 Gbps, supports the full range of current and emerging interconnect standards that support multi-gigabit serial signaling rates.

These standards include the well known serial fabrics such as Serial , PCI Express, Advanced Switching, and InfiniBand. Also included is a range of I/O types such as digital video, 10 gigabit Ethernet, Serial Attached SCSI, Serial ATA, and serial interconnects like RocketIO.

This new standard is designed to meet the needs of application areas typified by Defense and Aerospace that require a large number of high-speed capable I/O pins, are space-constrained, and ready for harsh environments. In addition, the ESD-protected connectors enable the development of a fully ESD protected module, thus supporting military two-level maintenance practices.
