Feature / Discussion: June 2006Free and open source developer tools such as Eclipse may appear to be great for the developer and a delight for IT budgets, but they take a certain but unknown toll out of the schedule and cost of any software project. The need to develop in-house expertise in supporting the tools themselves and the inefficiency of nonstandard configurations add risk and expense to a project. In response, vendors are beginning to step in to offer integrated, tested, and fully supported development configurations that meet the needs of many IT projects.
